Thirteen years ago, I embarked on a life-changing journey, leaving behind the familiar comforts of my home country to fully immerse myself and my family in a culture that, while not completely unfamiliar, was new in its depth and daily reality. As a single mother with three teenage sons, the decision to move was not an easy one, but it was driven by a deep desire to create new opportunities and experiences for my family.

Our journey has been a mix of excitement, uncertainty, and resilience. Moving to a new country meant fully embracing a way of life — living its nuances, traditions, and rhythms as part of our everyday lives. From deciphering bureaucratic processes to helping my sons adjust to new schools and friendships, every day brought its own set of joys and hurdles.

There were moments of triumph, like when we celebrated our first cultural festival in our new home, deepening our connection to traditions that felt both enriching and inspiring. There were also moments of struggle, like grappling with homesickness or feeling the weight of responsibility as the sole provider and guide for my sons. Yet, through it all, we persevered finding strength in each other and in the vibrant community we became a part of.

Over these 13 years, I’ve discovered that living abroad is as much about personal growth as it is about adapting to a new place. It has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the beauty of embracing change. My sons have grown into thoughtful, empathetic young men, shaped by the diverse perspectives and experiences that living abroad has afforded them.
